Simple Pedals for PC software (PTT for HAMradio, SDR console, FlexRadio)
I use the SDRconsole software for my QO-100 station and SmartSDR for my Flex radio. Both have in common that they run on a PC. I like such programs because they work with a mouse. With one exception: I want a PTT, preferably a foot switch, to keep my hands free.
I had to search and experiment till I found out how it works. I want to save you this time and share my learnings. No worries: It will be a short video.

Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) Basics/Tutorial
Просмотров 31 тыс.Год назад
AREDN is cool! It is a fast, IP-based wireless mesh network using cheap commercial components. Because it is self-organized, it is easy to use. Its initial purpose was for emergency communication, but it is also a lot of fun without an emergency. Today, we will build our first network and connect it to the “SwissDigitalNet.” Beginners can learn what it needs, and experienced users see how we so...
A Simple to Use And Extremely Powerful VPN Connects everything, Even a Remote Flex Radio
Просмотров 41 тыс.Год назад
Like many others, I live in a crowded place with more neighbors than space around the house. While this is a good thing for quality life, it is less than satisfactory for a HAM Radio operator. There are mainly two solutions to this dilemma: A divorce with a move to a remote location or a remote station. Because I love my wife, a remote station is a proper solution. Today we will cover one of th...

023 Overview for the Modern, Digital HAM Radio Operator (Hamnet, AREDN, Lora, etc.)
Просмотров 22 тыс.Год назад
Modern HAM radio is digital. In this video, I will show you the architecture of a modern network consisting of state-of-the-art technology used by HAM radio operators. It should act as a teaser and an overview of our possibilities. All network parts are wireless, independent of the internet, and primarily TCP/IP based. A goal should be to make them also independent of the power grid. The backbo...

I know this is 2 years old but something I didn’t see mentioned. If you add a second 1/4 wave stub spaced 1/4 wave from the first you will get a deeper and sharper notch. I don’t know how far you can take that, might get unwieldy after a few. You can make it tuneable also by adding a variable capacitor across the far end.
Hi there, I hope someone see this. I am doing the process for the rpi 5, in the git the image says it has rpi 5 support but when I go burn the image to the sd card I get “MBR DOES NOT HAVE A VALID SIGNATURE”. Does anyone recognize or know how to fix this?
Please note that you should have a resistive load on the current transformer secondary. This will typically be 50 Ohm. If you dont do this the ferrite core will introduce a series impedance into the circuit being measured. This series impedance will typically be 200 Ohm for a ferrite of that size. When you place a 50 Ohm across the secondary this series impedance drops to below 0.5 Ohm. Calculated as 50/(10^2) assuming a ten turn secondary. This termination resistance will also make the frequency response flatter.
This gentleman sounds exactly like Andreas Spiess, the guy with the Swiss accent.
That fancy SDR unit is amazing!
Try Halow combined 802.11ah for long distance and 802.11s for additional distance using mesh. Halow on lower frequencies and higher output power with mimo would be even beter like 64mbps oker 7kms. Give it an HT formfactor with two mimo antenas and internal normal wifi and ethernet port for your small devices to connect to then you could have your tacticool civilian manet. Use zello or briar over large areas with no cellular coverage
Thanks again for yet another amazing video. Do we need a ham radio license to experiment with this?
That will want to connect to any eero pro 6 mesh router that is nearby.
Thanks so much for all your excellent videos!
how do you load the drivers for the Heltec v2 board ? My pc wont recognize the boards.
Hi !!! Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I bought two Baofeng Handies, the cheapest ones, the simplest ones, BF999S, how can I send data from DB9 to handy number 1, receive data on handy number 2, and decode it with arduino uno and RS232 module HW-044 ? , and show that data on a cheap OLED display like 1.3" (GND, VCC, SCL, SDA) Thanks so much !!!!!!!
is it more powerful than meshstastic?
Weaker, but very low tech. Any form of radio, including cheap walkie talkies and a smartphone is all you need. Or any computer really. You can hack together a dedicated cable using a 4 pole audio jack from a cheapo earphone and a baofeng earpiece. That way the audio gets piped directly and doesn't suffer from background noise
Thks & I can't wait for LoRa satellite relays
Thank you for a truly great presentation. I have a VHF SA818 Firmware Version 1.1 - When I invoke filters --emphasis disable --highpass disable --lowpass disable SA818: INFO: +DMOSETFILTER:0 filters [Pre/De]emphasis: disabled, high-pass: disabled, low-pass: disabled and indeed a waterfall of the receive shows the filters to be disabled - UNTIL I transmit, then at least the low pass filter is restored. I was hoping to use an external ctcss/data decoder, but that will not work when the low pass filter returns after transmit... Any ideas ??? es Thank You agn, de nu5d

Hi Andreas. I really liked this video. Can the CP2104 module connect a photocoupler like the TLP222A to ground? This would be very handy for driving a sequence of my driver amp and PA. I can of course put the footswitch in parallel to a path to ground. 73 David M0YDH
Hi, can we use a SDR Rx radio to accurately measure the FM frequency deviation. ie. as a deviation meter to check the transmitter drive level? any thoughts? thanks regards Nigel ZL2SEA

Hi! It seems that you tested it without the RF source component. This way you tested the RF path and anthenna with the matching components. My question is: how to test it with the RF component populated? Because we don't know the its pin's impedance, so we need to match the impedance with the component populated. Thanks!
Oh man, thanks for the great video! the familiar “Swiss Distortion” explains wonderful lectures! Like your other channel so much. 73 DE BA4QFU
Always great channel ❤
Hello Mr. Andreas. I'm Aykut Kaplan. I'm a member of a search and rescue team in Turkey. I want to build a device that can detect people behind walls in earthquake debris. I need your help. Can we get in touch?
I wonder if IPv6 would also be a solution for this project? Cellular providers seem to mostly provide IPv6 addresses which are all globally routable. I am not sure if the cellular providers will just block all incomming connections though.
I would hope it will work with IP V6 because it does no more need CGNAT. But I am not sure if this is standard already for them. In my lab, so far, I do not use it.
Very neat, stumbled upon this while looking at options to build some new Fox Transmitters. I want to broadcast recorded voice audio rather than what sounds like musical tones. Have more fun taunting people. :)
Go for it!
How did you calculate or measure the cable delay ?
I did not calculate it, I showed in video 001 how to find it with an experiment.
Do you know if there is any SPICE model to run a simulation ?
I do not know :-(
Dude, didn't know you had this Chanel. I've been missing out.
I am not as active on this one.
Why hasn't anyone made a dual mode APRS (AX25 and LoRA) digipeater on 2 metres? In the UK the 70cm frequency is right in the middle of the licence-free ISM band, and most people who are raving about LoRA/Meshtastic are using the non Amateur allocation around 800 MHz, to be honest, Meshtastic is just a craze, as soon as people realise that it is only SMS they will rapidly get bored with it, it is reinventing the wheel a bit because you can doing everything already using standard APRS. So why not a dual-band AX25 and LoRA digipeater iGate on 144MHz?
I would just place two different igates at the same place. Then, you can use available technology. 868MHz is used because LoRaWAN is also on this frequency in Europe, BTW.
How far can you be for this to work?
That depend on the connection you use. With a mobile phone it works around the world.
One comment on this. SmartSDR for FlexRadio, which is included with every FLEX-6000 radio is plug and play and a VPN is not required at all to operate remotely. It even provides a secure connection to your radio and you do not require any network skills. Zero Tier is a great solution for accessing all the other devices on your network.
Are you going to produce a video showing how to set up a gateway? I'm in the US, and with a HAM license I can transmit up to 10 watts.
The Meshcom project changed considerably and they use APRS now. I did not check the new one out yet. 10W is most probably not helping a lot compared with the hassle to produce it because LoRa has a very high Link Budget and therefore does not need a lot of power like FSK.
Well done as always!!! Cheers* K4PMO
Thanks you!
I have just bought myself a LiteVNA 64 and the first problem is how to test an antenna that only has an ipex connector. It is the small antenna that comes with a Heltec V3. Any ideas?
I use an IPEX SMA adapter for that purpose.
How do you remove the cap from the black antenna? I want to use the same case as you...
With a heat gun.
What you want is an I2S stereo CODEC talking to the RPI or ESP32. Split the stereo to L = LocalAudio, R = RadioAudio - with the individual channels optimized. If you want more radio modules, they make 4-channel I2S codec that only needs the single I2S data-lane (2x16-bit split audio channels per 32-bit I2S channel period). That would still work with a minimal ESP32, and would give you another 2x radio slots for 3x total radios and a local mic/speaker.
Good idea!
The Rattlegram app would be great if it didn't have the huge drawback, which is that it doesn't work with the lock screen.
I agree.
Does the phonebook use hash or blockchain validation?
Nothing like that.
Genius! Great Video, I have tested it on the bench today and it works great ! de S79KW
You use a cable without a common mode choke. This may elongate the antenna.
I do not sknow what you mean :-(
I have a couple of questions if I may. I presume this will work if you use a k plug repeater connecting from the mobile phones 3.55mm jack? Also will this work where dcs is set on a channel? Thank you.
The audio just has to be able to travel from the Smartphone to the transceiver.
Avoid hell tech They do not work with meshtastic. Worse yet, they want you to download malware. Killed my Hotspot connection to my laptop. Very angry at the promoters of hell tech crap
does this count as encoded transmission?
I do not think so. It is just a modulation, not an encryption.
